In the last 2 days I had the opportunity to try 3 Southern Cal beers. 2 from Stone Brewing in San Diego and one from a brewery that is new to me, Bootlegger's Brewery in Fullerton. I enjoyed all 3 beers.
Rustic Rye from
Bootlegger's brewery is very Nice. Mild on hop flavor for an IPA but that allowed the Rye flavor to come through. This beer has a nice spice from the Rye. Most Rye beers underwhelm but this is really nice beer overall.
Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale from Stone Brewing has an excellent Hop flavor. An Imperial Red with more complexity and flavor. It is darker in color indicating the darker malts used than in a red but the hop flavor still comes through nicely. It is a limited release so I will pick this up again.
Cali-Belgie IPA Interesting take on IPA. It has a subtle hop aroma. The taste definitely has the fruity esters of the Belgian yeast but is nicely balanced by the hops. Stone reports that this beer is the same as Stone IPA other than the yeast. It is a great example of how yeast can affect the beer. I enjoyed this beer and will have to do my own test in my home brewery.
